Integrative Nurse Coach® Foundations

Foundations is the first course in the Integrative Nurse Coach® Certificate Program (INCCP). Over 14 weeks you build the core Nurse Coaching skills: therapeutic presence, person-centered communication, motivational interviewing and a holistic, mind-body-spirit approach you can bring into your current role right away. From week two, a Practicum student coaches you, so you experience coaching from the client’s side before you start coaching your classmates.

Meet your faculty mentor

Every other week, your small group meets live with a board-certified faculty mentor to reflect on the modules and work through Nurse Coaching Situations together.

  • Use motivational interviewing and appreciative inquiry to help clients find their own reasons for change
  • Apply the Model of Wellbecoming™ with culturally competent, person-centered care

How you learn

Every other week your small group meets live online for two hours with a board-certified Nurse Coach faculty mentor. Each meeting opens and closes with an awareness practice, and in between you reflect on the modules and share what you are learning from being coached and coaching.

You also work through Nurse Coaching Situations: realistic coaching scenarios from the course. After you work through them in the course, your mentor reviews the situations with the group, so you see how different coaches would approach the same moment.

You choose your preferred meeting time one month before the program starts.

Starting in week two, a Practicum student coaches you, so you feel what good coaching is like from the client’s side. Later in the course you move into peer coaching with fellow Foundations students, taking turns as coach and client and giving each other constructive feedback in a safe space.

Each week combines interactive video lessons, discussion forums and reflective activities, which you complete on your own schedule within the cohort’s weekly pace.

  • About one month before the start date, choose your small-group meeting time.
  • Block regular time in your week for lessons, discussions and your coaching sessions.
  • Think of a real goal of your own to bring to your coaching sessions. You learn coaching faster by being coached.

Integrative Nurse Coach® Practicum

The Practicum is the second course in the INCCP. Over 16 weeks you coach real clients, write up selected sessions as transcripts and get specific feedback from board-certified Nurse Coach faculty, then put that feedback to work in your next sessions. Along the way you complete the 60 supervised coaching hours the American Holistic Nurses Credentialing Corporation (AHNCC) requires for board certification.

How INCA helps you find clients

Finding clients is part of the Practicum, and you do not start from zero. INCA gives you the forms you need for your sessions and access to a HIPAA-compliant video platform, and helps you find clients three ways:

Some of your clients come from INCA’s list of people who have asked for free coaching sessions with a student Nurse Coach.

A Foundations student

You also coach a student in the current Foundations course, just as a Practicum student once coached you.

Clients you find

INCA provides you with resources in the course to support you. Knowing how to find clients is a skill you will use for your whole career.

What you will do

  • Coach individual clients and groups, including clients living with chronic conditions
  • Write up selected sessions as transcripts and receive specific feedback from experienced Nurse Coach faculty
  • Bring your real coaching sessions to your small group for discussion and feedback
  • Learn how to find and enroll your own coaching clients, a skill you will use long after the program
  • Build the competencies tested for national board certification
  • Grow in confidence as you prepare to become a board-certified Nurse Coach

How it works

Your small group keeps meeting live online every other week with your faculty mentor. Now the sessions you discuss are your own: you bring real coaching sessions with your clients, talk through what happened and get feedback from your peers and mentor.

If you continue straight from Foundations, your meeting time, mentor and group stay the same.

A transcript shows you exactly what happened in a session, not just what you remember. For selected sessions, you write up a transcript and add your own reflection: where the client opened up, where you may have led too much, what you would try differently.

A board-certified Nurse Coach faculty member reviews it and gives you specific feedback on skills such as presence, open questions, reflective listening and keeping the session client-led. You carry that feedback into your next sessions.

Practicum completes the contact hours needed for national board certification through the AHNCC: Nurse Coach (NC-BC®), Holistic Nurse (HN-BC®), or both exams for Health and Wellness Nurse Coach (HWNC-BC®).

  • Start lining up clients early, using INCA’s client list, your own network and the client-finding resources in the course
  • Schedule sessions at a steady pace so your supervised hours build week by week
  • Ask your client’s permission before recording any session you plan to transcribe
  • Focus on one feedback point at a time rather than trying to fix everything at once
  • Bring a real coaching session to discuss at your small-group meetings
  • Keep a running log of your coaching hours for your board certification application

Yes. Launching Your Nurse Coaching Business & Private Practice (40 contact hours) is built around finding and keeping paying clients. You finish with a niche statement, a 30-second introduction, one or two marketing channels with a 30-day content plan, a discovery call script and client journey map, pricing from the Rate & Pricing Calculator, and a week-by-week 90-Day Launch Plan. Scope and legal setup are checked against your state Nurse Practice Act.

Yes. Nurse Coaching is nursing practiced under your RN license, so it goes with you to hospitals and health systems, primary care, care and case management, nursing leadership and employee wellness. Integrating Nurse Coaching into Organizations and Communities (40 contact hours) helps you build it into your workplace. You finish with elevator speeches for four audiences, a Value Proposition Brief, a coaching touchpoint map and a finished proposal for decision-makers. It is included in the Implementation pathway (as your choice of Level 4 course) and the Expansion pathway. Over 25% of INCA students receive employer support for tuition.

Complete Levels 1 and 2 of the INCCP (246 contact hours), then apply to the American Holistic Nurses Credentialing Corporation (AHNCC) to sit for the NC-BC® exam. INCCP graduates are also eligible for the HN-BC® and HWNC-BC® exams, and Level 3 of the program includes self-paced review courses for the NC-BC® and HN-BC® exams. INCCP tuition is $4,300 for the Certification pathway, $4,900 for the Implementation pathway and $5,500 for the Expansion pathway. Each is a one-time tuition price, and monthly payment plans are available on every pathway. All three pathways make you eligible for the NC-BC®, HN-BC® and HWNC-BC® board certification exams. Implementation and Expansion add Level 4 courses for building a practice or leading within organizations.
