Mindfulness Program Details

This program is unique in that it is the only Mindfulness Based Stillness Meditation (MBSM) program exclusively for nurses.

Typically, nurses may experience many daily stressors both at work and home.

These may include working long hours, caring for patients and families experiencing pain, loss, and suffering, managing workload and patients with complex needs in areas of understaffing and limited resources. These stressors often lead to compassion fatigue, burnout, and emotional exhaustion.

Learning mindfulness and establishing a regular practice has been shown to help nurses manage stress more effectively and improve resiliency.

This program will guide you to meet difficult and unpleasant situations with acceptance and to be more aware of the flow of thoughts and feelings.

You will learn to become more fully present with yourselves, family and patients which will improve your ability to manage stress, enhance decision making, well-being and self-efficacy.

You will be supported by a group of nurses who share similar experiences and views.

Through participation in the weekly discussion, you will be able to share your experiences and challenges in an environment that is confidential, non-judgmental and where you are treated with kindness and compassion.

This program is offered as an educational experience. This program is not a mental health treatment or a substitute for diagnosis or treatment of a mental health problem such as depression, anxiety, or addiction. Nothing that will be taught is designed to treat any specific condition. If you are concerned about your mental health and wellbeing you are encouraged to discuss this with a medical practitioner.

This program is unique in that it is the only Mindfulness Based Stillness Meditation (MBSM) program taught by a nurse, exclusively for nurses. You will be supported by a group of other nurses who share similar beliefs and values and who wish to develop and experience the rewards gained from integrating mindfulness practices into your daily life.

Through participation in the weekly discussion, you will be able to share your experiences and challenges in an environment that is confidential, non-judgmental and where you are treated with kindness and compassion.

This program is an online program consisting of 8 weekly online presentations. Participants are invited to take part in the online zoom meetings at the beginning and end of the program. The weekly presentation will last for 1 to 2 hours and can be done at a time that suits you. You will need to spend a minimum of 20 to 40 minutes per day practicing the meditations. You will also need to set aside time to participate in the weekly discussions and share a personal reflection. There will be a short quiz at the end of each week based on the learnings from the presentation. There are additional resources available if you wish to take a deeper dive into what is covered each week.
The five-facet mindfulness questionnaire (FFMQ) is a self-help and self-scorable measurement on the five aspects of mindfulness namely: observation, description, mindful actions, non-judgmental inner experience and non-reactivity. It is an objective test on mindfulness and its impact in your life.

Practice! The only way to gain benefit from Mindfulness Based Stillness Meditation is through the experience of regular practice and integrating mindfulness into your daily life.

Watch the online presentation. Participate in the discussion group by sharing your own reflections and insights and commenting on at least two other’s reflections. Maintain a journal to record your practice and insights. Complete the weekly quiz The readings and links to resources are optional and are intended to provide a deeper understanding of the weekly topics. They also include research relating to mindfulness and nursing.

By signing up to the program you are making a personal commitment to a regular practice. You will also be agreeing to confidentiality and to keep all that is shared by participants within the group. You will be asked to complete a five-facet mindfulness questionnaire.
No. All you will need is provided in the weekly program presentation and resources. There are resources including books, apps and podcasts that you may wish to purchase however they are not essential to complete this program.
You will absolutely be able to share what you learn during this program with others. This program though is aimed at the nurse as the learner with emphasis throughout on your personal experience of learning the practices for yourself rather than learning them to teach to others.
No previous experience or knowledge of mindfulness or other mindfulness-based programs is necessary. Participants are encouraged to take part with a “beginners” mind.
When you have completed the post course evaluation along with the five-facet mindfulness questionnaire you will be able to download your certificate of completion and 48.5 contact hours.
This program is open to any nurse from any area, background, role or position who wishes to learn and experience the benefits of Mindfulness Based Stillness Meditation for themselves in a supportive environment among other nurses.
There will be three live zoom meetings in this program. One at the beginning, one during Week 4, and one at the end. Although they are not compulsory, they will serve as a good opportunity to meet with your teacher, connect with others on the program, ask questions, clarify the program content and requirements, and share your insights and experiences with the other nurses.
