Nurses can and should play an essential role in the emerging field of psychedelic-assisted therapies and research. They are a trusted professional clinical resource with unique, complementary skills for facilitating medical intake and integration support. Integrative nurse support and skills easily translate to the bio-psycho-spiritual care and support of individuals or groups to maximize the healing benefits of psychedelic experiences.
In May 2021, The American Journal of Nursing published an article by Penn, Dorsen, Hope, and Rosa, esteemed APRNs, sharing the following wisdom:
“The knowledge, skills, and values nurses bring to patient care are central to the therapeutic use of psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy. The competencies needed to sit with a patient as a psychedelic therapist include the skills long associated with nursing’s humanistic, biopsychosocial approach to care, specifically, ’empathetic abiding presence, trust enhancement, spiritual intelligence, knowledge of the physical and psychological effects of psychedelics, therapist self-awareness and ethical integrity, and proficiency in complementary techniques’.”
At INCA we acknowledge that the future of psychedelic therapy will be shaped not just by the advancements in psychedelic therapy, but by the compassionate, patient-centered care that nurses bring to the table. Their roles in ensuring safety, emotional support, and holistic care are crucial to maximizing the potential of these groundbreaking therapies, helping patients embark on transformative journeys toward healing.
The growing field of psychedelic therapy will significantly benefit from nursing participation in the interdisciplinary effort to develop safe, practical clinical approaches to psychedelic-assisted therapies. Nurses play a vital role in ensuring patients’ optimal response to psychedelics before, during, and after treatment. Additionally, patients will understandably often have many questions about psychedelic treatment. Nurses can help make sure patients continually feel supported throughout the entire treatment process.
