With the Spring Holidays, Easter and Passover, right around the corner children are showered with treats and sweets. Now more than ever parents are having a hard time keeping their kids on healthy diets.

Children’s food preferences have a huge influence on their food intake. Most likely we were all told at one point that, “You can’t leave the table before you clean your plate!” And we all remember how well that tactic worked in getting us to eat our greens – not very well.

A new research study published in early March reassures the parents among us that we are not alone – most parents are both mystified and troubled about their children’s eating patterns. Surprisingly, the role parental beliefs have in the development of children’s food preferences has seldom been investigated. Luckily the researcher’s results may help us parents hone our “feeding” techniques.

Catherine Russell and Anthony Worsley of the School of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences, Deakin University, Australia have identified three main influences on children’s eating habits. The first is the child’s level of food neophobia, fear of new things or experiences as well as personality. The second is the food’s sensory attributes like texture and appearance. The third is the child’s socialization experiences such as modelling and parental feeding behaviors.

Fig 1: Conceptual model of possible relationships between parents’ beliefs, children’s food preferences and children’s food neophobia.Graphic: ScienceDirect.com

The research found preliminary evidence suggesting that kids, aged 2-5, with healthier eating patterns had parents who believed that eating habits can change. The trend in the data also suggested that kids with less healthy diets had parents who were more inclined to believe that eating habits are a result of inflexible personality characteristics. However, the great message of this research is that there is a real need to do more in depth research about the ways in which parents’ beliefs affect children’s food preferences.

This is rich material for Integrative Nurse Coaches to explore as we have an insight into the significance of inter-personal relationships and nutrition alike. However you celebrate this time of year, remember to nourish your heart as well as your body!

A survey released in August 2012 reported that respondents spend 144 minutes a day surfing on their phones. Our lifestyle is dominated by media consuming habits. Entrepreneurs launching health and wellness Apps would argue that this is terrific news. Even as you read this article, hundreds of mobile Apps claim to enrich people’s lives by making the time we spend online beneficial to our minds and bodies.

Indeed, social and mobile Apps are influential tools that can be utilized for great causes. Some Apps raise breast cancer awareness and others help patients and their families manage Alzheimer’s. For this reason, INCA’s Integrative Nurse Coach Certification Program (INCCP) spends time guiding RNs on how to build their practices and create effective websites and social media networks to promote their values and services.

Yet the rising number of “personalized” Apps makes finding an App that fits as hard as it is to find a good neighborhood gym. Some magazines, like Time Health and Family, try to make the App search easier with “There are 10 Apps for That” lists. Not all innovative Apps make those “Top 10” blog posts. One App that did not make the cut is Higi. Higi entices users to embrace healthy habits so that they can accumulate “wellness scoring”, a type of social credit score that entitles users to awards. Another promising, not-yet viral, community based wellness App is Fig. Fig allows a user’s friends to offer kudos, a virtual nudge to get something done, encouragement or assistance.

What makes the wellness App industry so competitive? Since users share an application when they feel that it has lived up to its promise, wellness Apps have a very difficult goal to achieve- the high, and at times unreasonable, mental and physical health goals we set for ourselves.

That is why Nurse Coaches have a distinct advantage in creating successful wellness Apps. As the heart and brains of the field of holistic care, we addresses the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual needs of patients. Nurse Coaches are perfectly positioned to use, share, and even create Apps that inspire our patients to make lifestyle changes a reality.

Do you recommend any wellness Apps for keeping up with health related goals? Have you noticed patients using certain Apps more than others? What do you think gives them an edge?

What App would you design to help your patients stick to their treatment goals when they are home? Tak a look at the INCCP curriculum and consider joining us in April to learn more about using online tools such as websites, social media, and Apps effectively to grow your practice.

New book focuses on the emerging role of nurses as nurse coaches promoting lifestyle and behavioral changes to enhance wellness

Huntington, New York, March 18, 2013 – Nurse coaching is a natural extension of nursing practices. The American Nursing Association’s (ANA) latest publication The Art and Science of Nurse Coaching: The Provider’s Guide to Coaching Scope and Competencies confirms this. The book published by the ANA’s publishing program Nursebooks.org explains how professional nurse coaches implement health-promoting and evidence-based strategies with clients and support behavioral and lifestyle changes to enhance growth, overall health and well-being. It describes the emerging role of nurses as they assume the position of nurse coach in hospitals, clinics, communities, and in private professional nurse practices.

“Nurse Coaching is a role that speaks to the heart of nursing, but one that all providers can embrace,” says co-author Barbara M. Dossey, PhD, RN, AHN-BC, FAAN, HWNC-BC, co-director of the International Nurse Coach Association and Core Faculty, Integrative Nurse Coach Certificate Program. “It’s all about interaction with clients in a skilled, purposeful, and results-oriented way. This structured, relationship-centered approach by Registered Nurses promotes achievement of client goals” she adds.

The Art and Science of Nursing Coaching: The Provider’s Guide to Coaching Scope and Competencies is endorsed by 21 top nursing organizations, including the American Nurses Association (ANA), the American Holistic Nurses Association (AHNA), and the American Holistic Nurses Credentialing Corporation (AHNCC).

“Nurse coaching is grounded in the principles and core values of professional nursing,” says co-author Darlene R. Hess, PhD, RN, AHN-BC, PMHNP-BC, ACC, HWNC-BC, director of Brown Mountain Visions, a clinical practice and consulting organization, and faculty at both the University of Phoenix and Northern New Mexico College. She notes that, “Nurse coaching competencies can be integrated into any setting or specialty area of practice, and nurse coaches establish co-creative partnerships with clients to facilitate a process of change that assists them in realizing undeveloped potential.”

This is that time of year when many people are waiting for winter to end. We daydream about soft sand under our toes and warm sunshine on our face. Instead, some folks on the East coast get another “snowpocalypse” and soon enough stores run out of hot-chocolate, shovels and flashlights.

Just as we prepare for difficult weather, we need to prepare our bodies for unexpected health challenges. A new research study, published February 25th in the New England Journal of Medicine, found correlation between a Mediterranean diet and lowering the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Preventive care, in the form of balancing nutrition, is similar to stocking up before a storm – the storm might only end up with a dusting, but you just can’t afford to take that chance.

Maintaining a Mediterranean diet does not require a huge lifestyle change. Generally, the Mediterranean diet consists of: a high intake of olive oil, fruit, nuts, and vegetables; a moderate intake of fish and poultry; a low intake of dairy products, red meat, processed meats, and sweets; and wine in moderation, consumed with meals.

The published research and its conclusions can be found HERE. It provides solid scientific backing to the INCA’s Philosophy of Prevention used globally by nurse coaches.

The merging of these two fields of healthcare- philosophy of treatment and scientific methodology- creates a beautiful and resilient tool for care. Often, people deny such a merging is possible. This article does not come to prove them wrong; but to prove you right.

Reinforce the faith you have in your insights as a mindful RN and continue to sharpen your professional expertise with all the tools available to you. You can assure your patients, they will not get snowed.

Our workplace doesn’t always lend to creating a mindful healing environment. And Hospitals often lack the administrative support and money for building one. It’s not as if one nurse can change a rooted organizational attitude, right?

Actually, Judith Connor would beg to differ. Connor is a clinical matron for Cardiothoracic services at South Tees Hospitals NHS Trust. Throughout their daily duties her fellow nurses found that patients’ nutrition was suffering because of their hospital’s mealtime culture.

In response, Ms Connor championed implementing three principles that encourage patients to eat and drink properly during their hospital stay: protected mealtimes, assisted feeding and a new meal service. This became a success story for the patients, staff and hospital.

Ms Connor’s program mirrored the spirit of the checklist developed by the Institute for Health Care Improvement for improving healing environments. Still, many other nurses and caregivers are limited in implementing their recommendations. Human and material resources are stretched thin in hospitals and clinics around the nation as it is, and no nurse can build a private patient room, or provide wide doors to patients’ bathrooms by him or her self.

Yet, what we learn from Connor’s actions is that as the most immediate contact the patient has when he is under our care, we can make a significant impact focusing on the finer details.

Ask relatives to bring in music that the in-patient enjoys. Be sensitive to cultural practices the patient observes and pass that information to fellow staffers.

When possible, give the patient choices (in lighting, privacy and sound). And always remember the delicate balance between pain-alleviating humor and insensitivity.

Join us on April 18th in our Integrative Nurse Coach Certificate Program (INCCP) to learn more about how to make these sensitivities a second nature to yourselves and your colleagues.

Share with us, what are small ways in which you take control of the healing environment and make it more pleasant for the patient, and for yourself? Do you remember a small act of kindness that warmed your heart when a person close to you was taken care of by a nurse or caregiver? Small gestures go a long way.

Here is a wonderful global music video available in seven languages from our friends at Nightingale Declaration. This timely work clearly portrays the vital role of nurses and midwives who are, essential to reducing maternal and child death worldwide. These two critical concerns — of the 2010 G-8 and G-20 Summits in Canada, the UN Economic and Social Council and the UN Millennium Development Goals Summit in July and September, 2010, in New York City — were seen by Florence Nightingale as fundamental to human progress. She said “though everybody must be born, there is probably no knowledge more neglected than this.”

In 1939, Mary Breckinridge’s vision and determination lead to the creation of the Frontier Graduate School of Midwifery.
